Speech Intervention Treatment – Making it Fun

Speech intervention and speech treatment are terms loosely used today in early education. Toddlers and preschoolers seem to get the most attention. Speech intervention simply means doing something to correct or avoid a speech delay. Speech treatment is the method of intervention used to avoid or correct the speech problem. The terms apply to toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children or adults.

The American Academy of Pediatrics defines speech as the production of understandable sounds while language is defined as the underlying mental function and includes both expressive (speaking) and receptive (understanding) speech.

About the most common causes for the need of speech intervention is lack of verbal stimulation. Speaking, playing, reading, singing to our young children have a great impact on both speech and language development and are known in the world of speech therapists as ‘speech treatment’ methods.

We know that speech delays are easily corrected when caught early. But, it is important not to over react to toddlers ‘baby talk’. Baby Talk is normal. Don’t pressure your child, but provide verbal stimulation with books, singing, and repetitive rhymes.” They also remind. Don’t pressure the child by correcting them in their speech. Reading books that target a certain sound will provide them a clear and repetitive example which will often correct the problem before it becomes a problem. Children learn best from modeling and positive interaction.

Reading books to our children incorporates three of their leaning sensory – sight, sound, touch. To the young child, not only hearing, but seeing the word reinforces speech, while hearing by sentences and seeing a picture of that sentence enhances language (the concept of what the words mean). This is very important especially to children with ADHD, ADD, Apraxia, Autism, and other emotional learning problems. Some children need to be taught social and emotional skills as well as speech sounds. The simple addition from the sensor of touch by a loving parent or guardian makes a huge difference in the learning of language. As a matter of fact, there have been studies done that prove bonding occurs between the one who reads and the one who listens to books being read when sitting close and touching.

The American Academy of Pediatrics advise parents that children have different rates of development, and reading to your child is the best way to teach, prevent and/or correct improper diction at any age.

Through the use of books focused on one or two phonic sounds, attention is directed to specific sounds and blends of sounds, making the reader and the listener more aware of the written word. Thereby enforcing through repetition, the sound, the letter and the association in the English language. Now diction is reinforced in the developmental stage; Teaching rather than leaving to chance, the proper pronouncement of the words.
